Is iCloud a backup?

Partly. iCloud keeps files in sync, so a file you delete on one device disappears everywhere. A real backup also keeps older versions, which is why we pair iCloud with Time Machine or a cloud backup service.

Can you recover files from a dead drive?

We recover from your backups and from the Mac itself when the drive still works. A drive that has physically failed needs a specialist lab, and we will point you to a trusted one.
